Off-duty officials try to save woman from burning home



o/ AT SUBWAY o/ AMBAR THEY TRIED TO GET TO HER ... BUT AN OFFDUTY SHERIFFS DEPUTY AND AN OFDUTY FIREFIGHTER ... COULDNT SAVE A WOMAN FROM HER BURNING HOME SAM BOTH OF THEM SPOTTED THE FIRE ON PIMLICO PARKWAYTHIS MORNING AND TRIED TO GET INSIDE, BUT THE SMOKE WAS TOO HEAVY. TAMARA EVANS TALKED TO ONE OF THE MEN WHO TRED TO SE THE VICTIM. SHE HAS OUR TOP STORY. LIVE FROM THE SCENE. TAMARA? THE FAMILY OF 62YEAROLD LILIAN LEWIS HAS BEEN HERE AT THE HOME FOR THE ST COUPLE OF HOURS..TRYING TO SALVAGE WHAT THEY CAN. YOU CAN SEE THE DAMAGE THE FIRE DID TO THE FRONT DEN AREA. THATS WHERE FIREFIGHTERS SAY LILIAN LEWIS WAS LAST SEN.. AND WHERE THE HEAVIEST DAMAGE WAS. RUNS 1:15 OC: UNDER INVESTIGATION :8 to :14 :18 to :23 nat sound a little before ten oclock this morning...fire crews got the call to respond to this home on pimlico parkway..by a sherifs deputy pasing by.sot54:20 also a pasing firefighter offduty hapened to be here before our units arived.that offduty firefighter. was ken ridge. sot49:25 i was working in a house and looked out the front dor and saw smoke coming from the house and a deputy sheriff on scene. but it wasnt the sheriff s deputy that caught his attention...it was the home. sot 49:46 with heavy smoke and flames visible through it. the smoke was coming out. the officer was knocking on the dor to see if someone was home. we werent able to determine if anyone was home or not he says he forced open the front door and made entry to the garage...but the smoke was just too heavy...and dangerous. sot50:28 to get in to that, youd die from the gases and smoke so there was no way to gain entry to the house. fire crews arived moments later. inside the home..they would find 62yearold lillian lewis laying unresponsive on the floor in the den area.where the fire started. they also worked to save her pet.which survived..and is now recovering. an official report saying oxygen tanks were in use in the home...and lillian lewis was a known smoker. fire officialsnot releasing a cause just yet...saying the fire is still under investigation. AS FOR LILLIAN LEWIS... SHE DID LIVE HERE AT THIS HOME WITH HER HUSBAND... ROBERT LEWIS. FAMILY MEMBERS TELL US HE HAD JUST LEFT THE HOME TO RUN AN ERRAND....
